Les Fazzani, who relishes the mud, heads across the Pennines from her North Yorkshire base tomorrow with bright prospects of landing Group 3 glory in the Rose Of Lancaster Stakes.

Trained at Hambleton by Kevin Ryan, Les Fazzani was a winner on this course two outings ago on good to soft ground.

On her latest start, again at Haydock, she finished a creditable fourth to Barshiba in the Lancashire Oaks on faster ground than she prefers.

Withdrawn from an intended subsequent outing at York, because of unsuitable conditions underfoot, Les Fazzani takes up this engagement instead and could well be handsomely rewarded in a race, sponsored by totesport, which carries prize money of £57,000.

Paul Hanagan, who takes the mount on Les Fazzani, can also win the WKD Handicap on Our Joe Mac, another horse who will be very much at home on the expected easy ground.

Trained by Richard Fahey, Our Joe Mac, narrowly beaten at Chester in May, has run respectably in his two subsequent starts, but each time he was inconvenienced by unsuitable ground.

It is two months since he last ran, but Our Joe Mac will not lack for fitness tomorrow and is napped to gain his first success of the season.

Fahey saddles another proven soft ground lover in Valery Borzov, who runs in the Halliwell Jones BMW ‘Joy’ Handicap.

Four outings this season have yet to yield a win for the gelding, but he will find these conditions much more to his liking than when he ran at York a couple of weeks ago. A soft ground winner on Knavesmire last year when trained by David Nicholls, Valery Borzov has good prospects of resuming winning ways here under smart apprentice Lee Topliss.

At Redcar, Thirsk trainer Geoff Harker brings out City Of The Kings in the John Smith’s Redcar Straight-Mile Championship in a bid to complete a quick double with the five-year-old.

City Of The Kings did this column an excellent turn at Ripon on Monday when winning at 11-1. He has picked up a 6lb penalty for that success which makes life more difficult for him tomorrow. That said, he is fancied to shrug off his extra weight.

Easy Ticket will be hard to beat in the Northgate Vehicle Hire Nursery.

Also worth noting are Tim Easterby’s Malcheek (3.05), who is overdue a winning turn, and Drop The Hammer (5.20), a previous course winner.
