MALTON duo Richard Fahey and Paul Hanagan teamed up yet again for big race glory after 2-1 favourite Glen’s Diamond won the Group 3 Addleshaw Goddard Dee Stakes at Chester.
Musley Bank trainer Fahey’s charge was taking a step up in class from a Musselburgh handicap but travelled well on the heels of the leaders.
He was forced wide on the turn for home but picked up nicely under jockey Hanagan to score by two-and-a-quarter lengths from Maqaraat.
Fahey said: “I like this horse a lot and I think he’ll be a Cup horse one day as all he does is stay.
“He has no real speed, but one day he’ll be a racehorse.
“We’ll go steady with him now as we’ve been a bit tough on him, but this race came along and we took it.
“He hasn’t come in his coat yet, but we like him a lot. I’m not sure where we go next. He’s got a Group 3 penalty now, and I’m sure it will be up in trip wherever we go.
“I promised the owner we would get him to the Melbourne Cup and that’s the plan one day.”
Hanagan added: “That day at Musselburgh has really brought him on, mentally and physically. He’s a very straightforward horse – these good horses are genuinely easy to ride.”
