What a difference 24 hours makes – from a feast to a famine.
Today’s Flat action embraces meetings at York, Haydock, Chester, Goodwood, Lingfield and Newbury. And tomorrow, there is precisely zilch, with Britain’s only racing offering being two fairly modest jumping fixtures at Kelso and Fakenham, and no Flat meetings.
The Grand National-winning partnership of Donald McCain and Jason Maguire won’t be complaining, however. They head to Kelso with excellent prospects of dominating proceedings by completing a four-timer.
Our Jim has most at stake. He runs in the featured Jacques Handicap Chase, which boasts £12,000 in prize money and is run over an extended three miles.
Our Jim faces a much tougher time than on his latest visit to the Borders course at the beginning of this month. On that occasion, having originally looked to face three rivals, he was left with a straightforward walk-over when all three failed to turn up for various reasons.
Our Jim had previously won at Market Rasen. He is a pretty able performer at this level and he can land further honours for McCain and Maguire.
The Cheshire-based duo can kick-off in style by winning with Ballabrook in the KOSB Novices’ Handicap Chase.
An eight-length winner at Wincanton last time out, Ballabrook had previously scored at Towcester. Hat-trick honours beckon for the nine-year-old tomorrow.
Omokoroa can follow up for McCain and Maguire in the Reece, Ben And Jessica Coppola Novices’ Hurdle.
The five-year-old bounded home nine lengths clear at Hexham a fortnight ago and this looks a good opportunity to supplement that victory.
It is impossible to know the strength of The Weatherman, the representative of McCain and Maguire in the John Smith’s Open National Hunt Flat Race, as he has never raced before.
The four-year-old, a son of Definite Article, boasts a decent pedigree, and as this stable has a decent record in similar ‘bumper’ events, he merits close attention on his debut.
Mick Easterby has his horses in cracking form and nap selection City Ground makes appeal in the Peter K Dale Novices’ Handicap Hurdle.
A slender winner at Sedgefield two starts back, City Ground has since finished a creditable runner-up to Scriptwriter. He can get back in the winning groove.
Mr Tallyman (2.15) and recent winner Abragante (4.55) are also worth a second look.
At Fakenham, a note should be made of Tony McCoy’s mounts, Sansili (2.30) and Beggar’s Opera (4.05), and also Sarahs Gift (3.30), a winner on this course at the end of last month.
