Badger Foot, bought out of Jonjo O’Neill’s yard for £10,000 at Doncaster Sales last year as a prospective point-to-pointer, can prove himself a step above that grade by winning tomorrow’s Perth Gold Cup.

Trained by Lucinda Russell, the six-year-old has proved a revelation in recent months. Not only did he run up a six-race sequence of wins between the flags, he then graduated to handicap company under National Hunt Rules and collected again at Kelso last month.

Badger Foot is clearly a talented staying chaser and, with his confidence sky-high, he can add this valuable handicap to his bulging portfolio.

Philip Kirkby, who trains at Castleton on the North York Moors, is a shrewd operator under both codes and, following a Flat winner at Redcar this week, he can follow up by winning the JD Pipes Gold Cup Special Novices’ Handicap Chase with nap selection Amazing King.

Successful on the Flat and over hurdles, Amazing King recorded a win over fences on his recent chasing debut at Southwell.

He faces tougher opposition tomorrow, but there is surely more to come from the seven-year-old, who is fancied to run a big race for Richie McGrath.

Irish trainer Gordon Elliott regularly brings raiding parties to Perth and has dominated proceedings in the last couple of seasons by becoming leading trainer on Britain’s most northerly course.

It is extremely unlikely that tomorrow’s meeting will come and go without Elliott figuring on the scoreboard as he boasts a host of winning chances.

Priors Gold (2.30), a comfortable winner at Cork last time out, should get the Elliott bandwagon up and running in the opening novices’ hurdle, while Definite All Star (3.30) has every chance of coming out on top in the handicap chase after a recent promising third-placed effort on his fencing debut.

Chrystal Vision (4.00) has shown only glimpses of ability in six outings, scattered over a lengthy period of time. But Elliott clearly feels the seven-year-old is worth persevering with and the fact he has brought him to Perth suggests a bold bid is expected in a modest novices’ handicap hurdle.

The Elliott supporters should also be cheeing Chino Valdes (5.00), who collected at Cork on his latest outing and who looks likely to follow up under Jason Maguire, who has been booked to ride all the Elliott runners.

Tomorrow’s action, coming hot on the heels of today’s Derby, plus a whole host of other meetings, is very much after the Lord Mayor’s show. Two meetings, both over jumps, and no Flat racing, is all that is on the menu.

At Worcester, note should be made of Dubai Crest (3.45) and also You Can Of Course (4.15), who looks capable of lifting the race named in memory of former jockey John Burke.
