The biggest cheer at Hamilton Park tomorrow night will be reserved for a North Yorkshire horse if he happens to win the lowliest race on the seven-race card.

Fremen, trained at Sessay near Easingwold by David Nicholls, has a loyal legion of fans. And no wonder. Now 11 years old, he has won 22 of his 69 races and more than £121,000 in prize money.

Nicholls, who has few peers when it comes to keeping seasoned veterans fit, sound and enthusiastic, tends to run Fremen these days in selling races or claimers and the old horse is in his element.

He has won three of his last four starts, his most recent victory coming at Carlisle just over a fortnight ago.

Tomorrow, he contests the Racing UK Selling Stakes and he will not go down without a fight – he never does – as his supporters cheer him on.

Tim Easterby saddles Grissom at the Glasgow course in the Prestige Scotland Handicap over six furlongs and Duran Fentiman’s mount deserves to come out on top.

On his latest start at Ripon last week, Grissom ‘won’ his race on the stands side of the course, but he was two lengths adrift at the line of Addictive Dream, who raced on the far side. Well drawn here, Grissom can gain compensation.

Christmas Light is not to be underestimated in the TurfTV Classified Stakes.

Trained by David O’Meara, who chalked up his 50th win in his first year when Smarty Socks scored at Doncaster on Saturday, Christmas Light was a York winner last July off a mark of 74. Her rating was subsequently raised to 80, but she has not won since and she is now down to a handy looking 68.

She gets nicely into this race, for horses with a maximum rating of 70, especially as O’Meara has engaged 3lb claimer Sean Levey to ride her.

With a Thirsk outing under her belt last month, she should go well and is awarded the nap vote.

Sharp Sovereign (6.30), a winner on this course last season, shaped as though returning to form at Ripon last time out and is one for the Hamilton short-list, as is Botham (9.00), who goes particularly well on this track and who will be partnered by the in-form Danny Tudhope.

At Beverley, Muftarres is fancied to win the Marshal Tyres Handicap for Westow trainer Paul Midgley.

The six-year-old is overdue a winning turn. He has finished in the frame in all his three starts this season, at Hamilton, Redcar and most recently on this course when he was beaten only half a length into second.

Meandmyshadow (2.30) is well enough drawn to repeat last month’s course success for Yedingham trainer Alan Brown, while Dark Isle (4.30), trained by John Hills, should appreciate the step up to an extended seven furlongs after a decent run over six at Doncaster last time.
