Hoof It, an impressive winner at York last month, can make David Easterby’s marriage celebrations go with an extra swing tomorrow by winning the Wokingham Handicap on the fifth and final day of Royal Ascot.
The mount of Kieren Fallon, who was also aboard him on Knavesmire, Hoof It faces the starter at 4.25pm – less than an hour and a half after the wedding in Sheriff Hutton of David Easterby, son and assistant of Hoof It’s trainer, Mick, to Stephanie Walters.
With the entire Easterby clan set to attend the wedding, timing will be all-important if they are to be in front of a television when the racing action takes place more than 200 miles away.
Jointly-owned by world number two golfer Lee Westwood, who is playing in the US Open this weekend, and his manager Chubby Chandler, Hoof It has had this Royal Ascot objective on his agenda even before his successful return to the fray at York where he beat a strong field in convincing style.
The handicapper has raised him 6lb for that success, but the Easterbys have always believed this talented gelding is a Group-horse in the making and, if so, he should be too good for his handicap rivals – all 29 of them.
It’s going to be a thrilling contest. Hoof It is napped to win, and if he does, the victory cheers will be heard loudest of all in Sheriff Hutton.
The Golden Jubilee is tomorrow’s feature event at the Royal meeting and each-way punters could do far worse than plump for North Yorkshire raider Hitchens, who is priced at 33-1 and yet has every chance of figuring in the shake-up.
A close fourth to Delegator in the Duke Of York Stakes on Knavesmire last month, Hitchens has since won a Group 3 race in Ireland. Trained near Thirsk by David Barron, he is a lively outsider in this Group 1 showpiece.
Easy Naas winner Maybe can land the opening Chesham Stakes for Aidan O’Brien, who also has strong claims in the Hardwicke Stakes with Await The Dawn, who impressed at Chester last month when running away with the Huxley Stakes.
Sir Michael Stoute’s lightly-raced Modun, a decisive winner at Newbury on his reappearance, has been raised a massive 15lb since, but he still commands respect in the Duke Of Edinburgh Handicap, while Donald McCain can achieve the notable feat of saddling a Grand National winner and a Royal Ascot winner in the same year, courtesy of Overturn.
His Chester Cup winner runs in the closing Queen Alexandra Stakes and will take plenty of catching.
At Redcar, make a note of John Quinn’s expensive purchase Red Duke (2.15), who shaped well on his debut at Pontefract, and also the Paul Midgley-trained Polish World (3.20), who gave signs of returning to form at Newcastle last time out.
