TWICE OVER, the three-time Group 1 winning charge of Henry Cecil, takes to the Knavesmire stage tomorrow in the Sky Bet York Stakes.
The Group 2 contest over ten furlongs, the highlight of York Racecourse’s Music Showcase Weekend, has a prize fund of £100,000 – and Cecil’s six-year-old is among the seven-strong field.
Twice Over has twice won the Champions Stakes at Newmarket along with the Coral-Eclipse at Sandown. Other group victories have also come at Meydan, Newmarket and Maisons-lafitte.
But he has yet to hit those heights so far this season, finishing fifth in the Prince of Wales’s Stakes at Royal Ascot on his latest start in June.
His arrival is a welcome boost to a race which has seen both Godolphin and Ballydoyle provide top middle distance horses in recent years.
Last year’s prize went to Luca Cumani and jockey Kieren Fallon with Summit Surge, a horse which subsequently ran in the Arlington Million.
The action at York begins today – with the feature contest the £35,000 European Breeders’ Fund Authorized Lyric Stakes.
Tomorrow’s card also plays host to the six-furlong Sky Bet Dash, offering prize money of £50,000 and won 12 months ago by Jim Goldie’s Hawkeyethenoo.
Sheriff Hutton trainer Mick Easterby has entered his talented Hoof It.
