IT’S not quite a Major championship win for golf supremo Chubby Chandler but Hoof It’s victory in the £50,000 Sky Bet Dash at York Racecourse was still “quite a buzz”.
Chandler, manager of a string of top golfing stars including last weekend’s Open champion Darren Clarke and US Open victor Rory McIlroy, watched as his four-year-old, part-owned with world number two Lee Westwood, justified his 3-1 favourite’s tag to bag his third triumph on Knavesmire.
Hoof It, trained by Sheriff Hutton’s Mick Easterby and bred by Pocklington tyre magnate Reg Bond, threaded his way through the field on the far side in the six furlong contest to beat Tanjeed (25-1) by three-quarters of a length.
Next on the agenda is the Stewards’ Cup at Goodwood.
Chandler said: “You come racing and you have the favourite and there are 40,000 cheering it in, it’s actually quite a buzz.
“We want to go to the Breeders’ Cup. Mick doesn’t know that’s on our schedule yet. We have always wanted to go.”
“It’s different,” he continued when asked whether Hoof It’s win constituted his “Major”.
“With a Major you see the work that goes into it and you are partly involved. All I do is get on the phone to Mick and have a bit of fun with him.”
Easterby added: “I am so delighted and proud. We will go to Doncaster for the Portland (after the Stewards’ Cup). That’s his trip. He’s a high class horse and he has two lovely owners.”
Easterby later notched a double, and took his tally for the season at York to seven, when Itlaaq (16-1) won the Sky Bet Mobile for iPad Stakes.
Last Bid (7-2) showed off Great Habton trainer Tim Easterby’s eye for a bargain when winning the opening Sky Bet Mobile for iPhone Stakes.
The two-year-old wore down long time leader Kool Henry to win the five furlong nursery handicap by a neck.
Last Bid, ridden by Ted Durcan, cost Easterby only 800 guineas and, in completing a hat-trick of victories, the near £7,500 she won more than recouped the savvy trainer’s small investment.
“She’s a little star,” Easterby said. “She is absolutely cracking. She cost 800 guineas and she is very good value. She just improves, gets six furlongs at the moment and we will find another nursery for her.”
Twice Over (5-2) returned to Group winning form with a gritty display in the £100,000 Sky Bet York Stakes.
Henry Cecil’s six-year-old, three times a winner at the highest level, had disappointed – albeit in top class company – in his two outings this season.
Against a small, but talented, field including the Sir Michael Stoute-trained Class Is Class and the improving Dominant, the old horse showed he still had much to offer.
It had looked like the mile and a quarter contest might get away from him with a couple of furlongs left to travel as jockey Tom Queally was hard at work on Twice Over – without getting much response.
But, at the two furlong marker, he picked up in fine style and stretched away to beat Ransom Note by a length and a quarter.
