Hoof It, trained by Mick Easterby for the world’s number two golfer Lee Westwood and his manager Chubby Chandler, and a winner at York last Saturday, can strike it rich at Glorious Goodwood tomorrow by lifting the £100,000 Blue Square Stewards’ Cup.
Kieren Fallon, who has established a notable rapport with the highly-talented gelding, again takes the mount with Hoof It fancied to defy a 6lb penalty, which takes his weight up to a hefty 10st.
It is widely thought Hoof It is a Pattern-race winner in the making and, on the face of it, he will need to be to give weight and a beating to 27 rivals. He was not extended to win last Saturday, which was his second York win of the campaign, and although detractors may point to the fact he could finish only seventh in the Wokingham Handicap at Royal Ascot in between, the soft ground counted against him then.
Easterby also saddles Ancient Cross, who has a fighting chance after his Gosforth Park Cup victory, while Richard Fahey also has two smart entries in Quest For Success, winner of the Scottish Stewards’ Cup earlier this month, and Brave Prospector, who shaped well in that race on his first outing for the Malton trainer.
But they’ve all got Hoof It to beat and he can prove his class by hitting the jackpot in this famous handicap.
The Group 1 Markel Insurance Nassau Stakes takes pride of place as the card’s most prestigious race and there’s a cracking line-up with Crystal Capella, Midday, Principal Role, Misty For Me and Fahey’s ultra-tough Coronation Stakes third Barefoot Lady all set to take part.
Marginal preference is for Midday, winner of the corresponding race last year and representing the same connections, trainer Henry Cecil, jockey Tom Queally and owner Khalid Abdulla, who remain on a high after their superstar Frankel extended his unbeaten run to eight wins in Wednesday's Sussex Stakes.
Tim Easterby has his horses in such great form that Confessional should not be overlooked in the opening bluesquare.com Stewards’ Sprint Handicap – confined to horses who miss the cut in the Stewards’ Cup – while Richard Fahey has good prospects with Mickdaam in the Overtones Maiden Stakes.
The son of Dubawi, who cost 320,000 guineas as a yearling, made a most promising debut at Newmarket’s July Festival to finish third in a similar race. With that experience under his belt, he is entitled to make a bold bid.
At Thirsk’s bumper eight-race card, Nawton trainer David O’Meara is fancied to scoop the honours by completing a treble.
O’Meara can win the Constant Security Nursery with Kool Henry, who found only Last Bid too strong in a similar contest at York last Saturday; Powerful Presence, who is napped to gain compensation for his narrow defeat at the same Knavesmire meeting in the Ekosgen Handicap; and Simple Jim, who is selected to repeat his success of 12 months ago in the Glenridding Handicap.
Malton’s White Rose Saddlery sponsors both divisions of the lady amateur riders’ handicap and Wendy Gibson, riding for Paul Midgley, has good prospects of winning both legs, courtesy of Cool In The Shade and Winning Draw.
