TORE Andre Flo and Alan Thompson scored on their home debuts, but there is much for Leeds United manager Dennis Wise and his assistant Gus Poyet to work on at this week's training camp in Cyprus.
The encouragement of Flo's third minute headed goal rapidly gave way to despair as West Brom roared back to take a 3-1 interval lead and eventually win 3-2 to register their first victory at Elland Road since 1978.
It was Albion's third success of the season over Leeds and their first away victory since October 17. So, two years after Ken Bates rescued the club from total oblivion, United are only prevented from propping up the Championship table because they have scored more goals than Southend who have the same number of points.
Even the absence of John Hartson, Jason Koumas, Nathan Ellington, Martin Albrechtsen and Steve Watson wasn't enough to stop Albion in their tracks and United have now lost 18 league games in a season that has become a desperate struggle for Championship survival.
The pressure seems to be getting to Wise, too, as he was ordered to the stand by replacement referee Neil Swarbrick for pushing Albion match-winner Diomansy Kamara off the pitch as the striker was taking too long to make his exit on being substituted.
Wise also took exception to Kamara's gesture to the crowd as the Albion man was booed off.
Wise said: "It took him more than four minutes to walk off the pitch, so how the referee could allow only four minutes' added time when there were four substitutions I don't know.
"Kamara took his time and unfortunately I pushed him to get him off the pitch. I'd had enough of him to be honest - making gestures to the crowd. I think everyone was fed up with him."
Flo's excellent header and Thompson's exquisitely taken free-kick offered hope for the future, but United are looking as vulnerable as ever in defence and that is the department of the team Wise knows he must work on in Cyprus.
Ex-York City man Jonathan Greening, outstanding in Albion's midfield, took just four minutes to cancel out Flo's early goal, Kamara's pace and power were too much for Hayden Foxe as the striker bore down on goal to put Albion ahead and Kamara's 25-yard shot into the top corner just before half time underlined the Baggies' superiority.
With the game by-passing Robbie Blake, Wise sent on Ian Moore, while Tresor Kandol replaced defender Robbie Elliott in a double substitution which brought an improvement.
Yet after Thompson had pulled a goal back, David Healy wasted a late chance to equalise when he was off target with a volley.
Foxe's booking was his fifth of the season and the Australian defender will now be suspended for the visit to Hull on Tuesday, January 30.
