Frazer Richardson is looking to make the right-back spot at Leeds United his own after years of living in Gary Kelly's shadow.

Rotherham-born Richardson, 24, has nothing but admiration for Republic of Ireland veteran Kelly whose contract at Elland Road expires in the summer.

Richardson's patience has been tested, with Kelly setting a high level of consistency over the years, but a recurring ankle injury to the Irishman has given Richardson his chance.

The younger man has himself been a victim of injuries this season, but he made a successful return in the vital 2-1 win at Hull and kept his place in last week's 2-1 defeat at Norwich.

Richardson said: "Gary has been the ultimate professional and has been brilliant with me. I've learned a massive amount from the way he conducts himself on and off the pitch and I would like to take on the mantle from him.

"It is something I've wanted to do for a long time - ever since I came to Leeds aged 16. I would just love to follow Gary's example."

Richardson is highly thought of by Leeds manager Dennis Wise, who enthuses: "Frazer is young, quick and has improved a lot. I couldn't ask for more from him. Gary Kelly's injury has kept recurring and he has a bit of competition behind Frazer and Armando Sa at the moment."

  • Leeds boss Dennis Wise has challenged an FA charge of improper conduct and has asked for a personal hearing. Wise was sent to the stand by referee Neil Swarbrick after a confrontation with West Brom's Diomansy Kamara at Elland Road on January 20.
