Injuries to Davide Somma and Luciano Becchio have given Leeds United manager Simon Grayson a pre-season headache, writes Henry Cowen.
Somma’s need for knee surgery, revealed by himself on Twitter, has ruled him out for the season while Becchio has suffered a hamstring injury and may require surgery as well.
Despite the loss of two of his star men Grayson isn’t looking to dip into the transfer market: “A striker isn’t a priority. It’s a blow to be without Dave and equally with Luciano depending on how we go, but we have other players who can step in there so it’s not a priority for me.”
The revolving door at Elland Road has seen more players exiting than arriving. Bradley Johnson, Neil Kilkenny and Kasper Schmeichel, have left with Michael Brown and Paul Rachubka coming in.
Having been beaten by Paul Jewell’s Ipswich to the signature of ex-Leeds hero Lee Bowyer, Grayson remains bullish.
He said: “At the start of summer I could have got four or five in and we would have had the numbers, but would we have had the quality? I don’t think so.
“Other than Leicester who have spent a lot of money, there hasn’t been a lot going off in terms of dealings. Things will happen, it’s just a case of when.”
