ONE of York’s stalwart sporting sons, Ralph Skilbeck, has died. He was aged 83.
The former railway worker starred for the LNER Builders football club, which he also served as club secretary for many years.
He played cricket in the York League for Boston Spa and Acomb Cricket Clubs, following in the footsteps of his father Claude Skilbeck.
At Acomb CC, Ralph Skilbeck helped to found the Acomb under-16s section. He also served on the York Minor Football League committee. His efforts were recognised in 2008 with a special FA award for 50 years’ service to the game.
He is survived by his wife Angela, three children - Julie, David and Elaine - and eight grand-children.
The funeral is at Holgate Methodist Church at 2.30pm tomorrow followed by cremation at York Crematorium.
