THE focus is on young sporting talent in the latest shortlists for the Active York Sports Awards.

Sporting achievement in the city will be recognised at the dinner at the University of York on

Wednesday, April 9, and today we can reveal another three shortlists of potential winners.

The awards are being organised by Active York - the city’s sport and active leisure partnership working to encourage people to be more active more often - and backed by The Press.

The award categories featured today are the under-18s trio of Young Male Sportsperson, Young Female Sportsperson and Young Disabled Sportsperson.

The other categories are Team/Club Award, Student Sportsperson of the Year, Sportsman, Sportswoman, Disabled Sportsperson, Young Sportsperson of the Year, Sportsperson of the Year, Coach/ Volunteer Award, Active School Award and Active Workplace.

The awards will be judged by members of the Active York board, which includes sporting partners from across the city, with the winners announced at the dinner.

Greg Dyke, chairman of the Football Association and Chancellor of University of York, will be guest speaker at the awards ceremony, which is designed to recognise the achievements and contributions of the city’s sporting community.

The dinner in the Roger Kirk Centre is open to the general public and tickets are priced at £40 per person, or £300 for a table of eight, which includes a pre-dinner drinks reception, a three-course meal and entry to the awards ceremony.

Active York Sports Awards nominees

Young Male Sportsperson (U18)

Daniel Thompson - plays volleyball for York’s premier league team, and progressed to represent his county and England North, before winning selection to the England cadet men’s squad.

Alistair Bevan - competes on a national level for York’s Kenshinkan Karate Club, while also being a key member of the England squad. Aiming to compete in the JKA World Championships in October.

James Fitton - member of City of York Hockey Club, selected to attend Junior Regional Performance Centre and won place in U15s team.

 

Young Female Sportsperson (U18)

Katherine Birch - progressed to play for City of York Hockey Club ladies first team. A member of England U16s squad.

Rosie Todd - played football at the Girls Centre of Excellence at York College since she was under 11. Recently trained with the U17 England squad.

Chloe Macek - just been selected for the England U17s football squad to play in their next fixture. Plays for the North Yorkshire Girls Centre of Excellence U17s.

 

Young Disabled Sportsperson (U18)

Chloe Buck - bidding to be named in her first senior international swimming squad this year having improved all her world rankings in 2013. Starred at the National Open Short Course Championships and the UK School Games.

Ben Robinson - represents the county at table tennis and has been invited to train with the Great Britain squad. Also plays boccia for his school.

Sianagh Gallagher - selected for the Great Britain paraclimbing team in 2013, and her form saw her secure three podium finishes in international and British competitions.
