TENNIS aces from York scooped a superb medal haul at the 11th National Learning Disability event in Nottingham.

Tennisability’s Laura Wells won gold in the ladies singles division three, with Emma Lindsay taking bronze in the same division.

Matthew Wreglesworth won gold in the men's singles division 13.

In the mixed doubles, Wells and Wreglesworth paired up to win silver, while Lindsay was fourth with Lane Stow.

Tennis For All’s Laura Campbell and Cameron Long won silver in divisions one and 12 respectively.

Campbell teamed up with Sarah Simpson to win bronze in the ladies doubles and Long partnered Jack Dickson to win bronze in the men's doubles.

Meanwhile, City of York Athletic Club's Joe Hadfield, Christopher Cook, Graeme Hartley and Lewis Brown represented Yorkshire and the Humber at the Special Olympics National Indoor Athletics Competition at Lee Valley Athletics Centre in London.

The weekend was a fantastic success for the 22-strong team, as Yorkshire and the Humber achieved nine gold medals, 13 silver medals, nine bronze medals, six fourth places, three fifth places and two sixth places.

City of York’s quartet individually achieved two gold, two silver and five bronze medals, plus a fifth place.

Head coach Hannah Higginson, of York, said: “I am extremely proud of not only my four local athletes but the whole Yorkshire and Humber team for their brilliant success and fantastic attitudes both on and off the track.

"Overall, the weekend was amazing and all the athletes and coaches can't wait to be reunited for another competition soon."

A Special Olympics themed open day will be held at York St John University on Sunday, November 29.

There will be opportunities to join current Special Olympics athletes to try out tennis, boccia, carpet bowls, athletics and kurling, plus table tennis, from 10am to 3.30pm.

The guest of honour will be Craig McCann, a Great Britain Paralympian, who will be showcasing inclusive fencing throughout the day.
