ALFONSO Salgueiro’s brace could not save the University of York Futsal Club from a 3-2 defeat to Stockport.
The match was a meeting of the FA National League north division’s bottom two sides, who were both tied on three points prior to the game and it was the visitors who took advantage of a defensive lapse to take the lead with a scrappy goal.
They then added a second shortly afterwards as York were pressing to try and get back in the game.
The hosts did manage to reduce the deficit before half-time when Salgueiro tapped in from close range after a right-wing pass from James Grey.
After the restart, the Black and Golds’ goalkeeper Jonny Sims pulled off several impressive saves to keep his side in the game before the Lancashire team finally beat him with a well-crafted set piece.
Salgueiro went on to provide the finishing touch to a sequence of one-touch passes to add a second home goal but there wasn’t enough time to force an equaliser with the goals from Stockport pair Fernando Jimenez (2) and captain Ashley Jones proving decisive.
