NORTH Yorkshire’s one-two assault on the Portugal Masters ended in a neck- and-neck second round for Simon Dyson and John Parry.

Both men – York-born Dyson, and his Harrogate counterpart – wrapped up second rounds of two-under-par 70 in which both were blighted by respective double-bogey finishes on the 18th hole at the midway position of the European Tour event.

But Parry still has the edge over his more experienced rival, whom he leads by one shot courtesy of his first round 69 as opposed to Dyson’s two-under 70.

World number 64 Dyson, usually a model of consistency, experienced a high and low time at the Oceanico Golf Club in Vilamoura.

Opening with a birdie, the Malton & Norton GC star picked up two more shots on the fifth and sixth holes.

But the seventh hole yielded his first bogey, another following at the 11th.

The roller-coaster round headed up with successive birdies on 13 and 14 and another on 16, though his third bogey of his second round was chalked up at the 15th.

From that dip the 32-year-old soared again, picking up a shot on the 589-yard par-five 17th.

But on the final hole fortunes plummeted with that double-bogey six giving him a second successive 70.

The 23-year-old Parry, meanwhile, started and ended his second round in the doldrums.

The Harrogate GC player dropped a shot on the first hole.

Recovery was swift. He bagged a superb eagle three on the 579-yard par-five fifth and from then on in it was run of pars interrupted with a treble flourish by birdying the tenth, 12th and 17th.

That though was ruined by mirroring Dyson’s six on the 18th, the double-bogey consigning both men to a mid-leaderboard finish.
