DO you know a local sporting hero?

There is still time to nominate an inspirational amateur player, coach or volunteer for the Sporting Hero accolade in our York Community Pride Awards.

This is the eighth year The Press has run the awards to celebrate special individuals and groups, whose sterling work marks them out as true champions of the city.

The competition, which is being run in connection with City of York Council and several local businesses, has received a stream of nominations and there are only two weeks left to make sure your chosen candidate does not miss out.

The Sporting Hero award is sponsored by York Racecourse and aims to honour a “person who has made an outstanding contribution to amateur sport in a playing or non-playing capacity”.

Stuart Martel, sports editor at The Press, said: “The York Community Pride Awards are a fantastic way for York to recognise the unsung heroes who make the community so special.

“There are some incredible people with remarkable stories and I would encourage those who know somebody who deserves recognition to nominate them for the Sporting Hero award.”

Organisers are also looking for individual nominees for the following categories: spirit of youth, public sector hero, charity fundraiser of the year, child of the year, teacher of the year, volunteer of the year, health service hero, York Community Pride Award person of the year and parent of the year.

To make a nomination, visit thepress.co.uk/pride before July 22.

All nominees must live or be based in the City of York Council tax area.

Winners will be invited to a ceremony at York Racecourse in October.
