Volleyballers from across the north, some from as far away as Manchester and Middlesbrough, flocked to York College for an action-packed York VolleyFest 2011, writes Henry Cowen.
The winning team was a family affair as Harrogate’s Helen and Graham Barker, their son, Elliott, and friend, Kate Perry, claimed first place.
Elliott is already accustomed to volleyball success as the 14-year-old was recently selected for the North of England under-17s cadet squad.
The Barker and Perry team, from Harrogate, beat Boathouski, an all-Polish team from Dewsbury, into second place.
Manchester Jets’ long journey was vindicated as they beat York Vikings to win the Plate final.
The day was not all about winning, however, with 20 teams enjoying the action. There were plenty of youngsters on show with players from Joseph Rowntree School, All Saint’s RC School, Huntington School and York College spread over the five York Volleyball Club teams and many other Yorkshire junior squad players in action as well.
A Come And Try It court was also laid on to give primary school children the opportunity to learn the basics of volleyball from an experienced coach.
Meanwhile, Go Spike volleyball sessions are being held on Thursdays from 6.30pm at the southern end of Rowntree Park, catering for all abilities.
