UNBOWED – that was the City of York Hockey Club under-14 boys team after their latest Yorkshire Hockey League tournament held at Huntington School.

In a day of solid defiance the York ranks racked up an impressive trio of triumphs.

First up were Hull against whom Andrew Hyams opened the scoring by tapping in a ball following a good run by David Cragg through the visitors’ defence.

Will Blackburn doubled the lead a couple of minutes later off a reverse-stick shot.

Sam Engleman scored the third after a run up the pitch that was rewarded by a return pass from Charlie Higginbottom.

York began to sit back after that spell, and Hull came back into the game with a strike in the last five minutes, but it proved a mere consolation as York saw out a 3-1 win.

York’s second match was against Huddersfield Dragons.

Blackburn scored a quick double, the second after latching on to a good cross from Engleman.

Jack Harrington, James Fitton and Hyams all scored in an emphatic 5-0 success.

The final match was against a strong Thirsk side, both sides testing each other before Harrington released Ben Mould behind the Thirsk defence after five minutes to put York up 1-0.

Stout saves by York goalkeeper George Good kept them in the match, until Fitton’s long ball found Mould, whose shot was blocked by the keeper, only for Blackburn to bury the rebound.

Engleman then put Blackburn in on goal, with Mould scoring his second, putting in the rebound from Blackburn’s shot in off a post.

Blackburn completed the double double by scoring the final York goal, with the 4-0 final scoreline masking a close-fought match.

Charlie McMahon was strong in goal for York in the first two matches, and the defence, including Joe Inman, Luke Burnett and Sam Nicholson, and the rest of the squad, including Zach Adamson, Sam Lloyd and Callum Green, all helped to preserve York’s victories.
