A new triathlon club launched this week at Selby’s Barlby High School as interest in the ironman sport increases, writes Matthew Naylor.
As part of Carol Saunders Swim School, juniors and adults alike took to land and sea to test themselves and to try their hand at a new exercise hobby.
Founder and director Carol Saunders said that it is a testament to brothers Alistair and Jonny Brownlee’s success on world stages such as London 2012 that triathlon is receiving greater attention.
“The Brownlee brothers have been huge for increasing interest in triathlon and that is translating itself to grassroots level,” said Saunders.
“The gym can be a little boring for some so this gives people a new way to keep fit while having fun.”
Comprised of swimming, running and cycling, triathlon has often been thought of as the greatest test of a person’s cardiovascular fitness.
Despite the perception of arduous endeavour, Saunders moved to dispel talk that triathlon attracts expert-level participants only.
“Anybody can come and be a total beginner,” she remarked.
The classes will be run on a Tuesday and Thursday evenings at Barlby High School.
