THE annual aquatic action of the Yorkshire Swimming Association Championships come to an end this weekend with York City Baths Club looking to build on their impressive displays so far, writes Matthew Naylor.
After two strong weekends in the competition in the middle of February, confidence was high as they descend on Sheffield for the sprints today and relays tomorrow.
Last month’s Championships in Leeds yielded a huge medal haul from the YCBC’s 31 participants, including Lucy Nicholson becoming Yorkshire champion in both 800 metres freestyle and 200m butterfly.
The 13-year-old posted a good enough time in the 200m freestyle to qualify for nationals.
Also among the medals for the club was 11-year-old Paris Grenier who competed in 12 events, winning four silver medals and three bronzes.
From the 13 boys who competed over the weekend, Sam Russell did ten events, while George Hogg brought home two bronze medals from his four events.
Meanwhile, New Earswick Swim Club performed well at Scarborough Kingfisher’s eighth Spring B & C grade gala.
Raie-Clare Underwood took home gold medals in 50m backstroke and 50m freestyle in addition to her 3rdplace finish in 50m breaststroke.
Millie Norman’s success came from winning 100m individual medley and finishing runner-up in 50m breaststroke, while her second place in the skins event earned her £10 prize money. Tom Bainbridge and Megan Taylor also won six medals between them, though without a first-place finish.
Paulette Wright, of the teaching team, said: “They were all fantastic.”
