LEADERS Wilberfoss Under-15s were 1-0 winners at Wetherby in the City of York Girls’ Football League.
Foss, sponsored by Jorvik Construction, won the game with a second half goal from Ellie Parkin.
Wetherby started confidently and forced a corner in the first minute, but they were unable to sustain that momentum and Foss goalkeeper Georgia Stanton had one of her quieter games.
Wilberfoss had to wait until the 15th minute for their first real attempt on goal when left-back Olivia Cant saw her effort from distance saved.
That proved to be the spark for Wilberfoss and they pressed for the rest of the half, and they carried that into the second half.
Five minutes into the second period, Jess Alston went on a great run down the right and her cross was met brilliantly by Alex Harvey, but she was denied by the keeper.
The visitors again went close in the 18th minute through Emma Nelson, before the important breakthrough came in the 22nd minute. A corner from Ellie Whytock found Syd Greening and the striker’s first-time effort was only partially saved, allowing Parkin to follow up and score.
Wilberfoss continued to look for a second goal and they almost found it in the 29th minute when captain Ellie Fitzmaurice was unlucky to see her volley come back off the crossbar from a corner.
With a minute remaining, Foss defender Poppy Clancey cleared up a Wetherby attack.
