IT was a case of better late than never as York ‘A’ won the much-delayed 2014 York & District Junior Cricket Association Under-9s League finals day.
The competition finale was rained off at the back end of the 2014 season and rescheduled for early this season at Heworth Cricket Club.
Acomb ‘A’ won their semi-final against Londesborough Park to set up a final against York, who came out on top in their last four against Heworth ‘A’ with a notable bowling performance from Darsh Johar and big scores from Elias Smith and Finlay Recchia.
Heworth went on to secure third place with a win over Londesborough Park in the third and fourth place play-off game.
That left Acomb and York to contest the final, which was a close-fought game with great cricket from two strong sides.
York batted first and, against a good bowling attack, racked up a net score of 258.
It needed a tight bowling performance to defend that target and York delivered, with all the team stepping up and keeping the Acomb batting in check.
There was a nail-biting end to the game with the result in the balance until the last over, but a couple of late wickets fell as Acomb tried to chase down the runs required.
In the end, Acomb came up short with a net score of 237, and York were crowned 2014 champions.
