TEAM Jorvik put themselves on the Yorkshire swimming map by hosting their first-ever gala at the John Charles Aquatic Centre, in Leeds.

The Viking Sprints Three Grades Meet was an ‘A’, ‘B’ and ‘C’ grade gala, catering for the full range of swimming abilities.

A total of 280 swimmers represented 19 clubs from all across the county, with Team Jorvik fielding a squad of 51 swimmers.

The squad put on a magnificent display, with more than 200 individual swims producing 138 new personal bests – and 19 Team Jorvik swimmers achieved a clean sweep of personal bests.

The Team Jorvik medal tally was just as impressive: ten speeding tickets, 27 gold medals, 27 silver medals, 29 bronze medals, 25 fourth place awards, 20 fifth place awards, 19 sixth place awards and 196 top ten placings.

Maani Aghahoseini, 14, won the Top Boy trophy for his age group, with his training partner Matthew Bradley coming second.

In the 15 and over age group, Ruth Salmon and Hollie Price came second and third, while 13-year-olds Shelley Taylor and Louis Williams both came second.

In the ten-year-old age group, Ciaran Harte finished second.

The highlight of each session was the “Blind Date” relay, with teams of four swimmers each competing in a 50-metre freestyle.

The teams were selected using the results from the 100m individual medley, combining the fastest boy and girl with the slowest boy and girl in team one.

The format was carried through the results list to provide ten teams.

A cash prize was at stake for the winners along with consolation prizes for the second and third placed teams.

A Team Jorvik spokesman said: “It was excellent to see swimmers from different clubs, of all ages and abilities, quickly sort out their respective teams and put on a tremendous exhibition of swimming.

“Their obvious passion for their sport and competitive sprit really shone through.

“All concerned are really looking forward to next year’s meet.”
