CITY of York Hockey Club Under-16s girls ‘B’ struggled in their latest three-match Yorkshire Youth League fixture at Thirsk.
Having opened with a 1-0 victory over Driffield, the York ‘B’ team lost 3-0 to Doncaster and 2-0 to Wakefield.
York played some good passing hockey against Driffield, with Penny Newson and Gemma Kane making some good runs down the flanks.
Vicky Wrigley and Eve Bracken worked hard in midfield and York’s efforts were finally rewarded with a goal from Amber Moores.
Stout defence from Vicky Hodson and Izzy Taylor helped ’keeper Ellie Fletcher keep Driffield at bay for a fine York win.
They were next in action against a strong Doncaster team and were quickly 2-0 down.
However, York battled back and had chances to get back in the game through Frankie Marsh and Jazz Colley, before Doncaster added a third.
In their final game against Wakefield, York again found their form with Kayleigh Kilsby, playing well down the right, while Sophie Sweetland battled up and down the left wing. Wakefield scored against the run of play and then added a second, but York continued to play good hockey with Fizz Punnett prominent.
The City of York U12s boys ‘A’ team had a mixed bag of results in their third Yorkshire Youth fixture in Halifax, losing three, drawing one and winning one.
Tom Andrew turned in a confident display in goal, making many vital saves and clearances.
Tom Brett and John Doran had good strong defensive games and snuffed out several attacking moves.
Denholm Horn, Danny Vaughan, Joel Surdhar and Henry Wilson were strong in midfield.
The attacking trio of Sam Engleman, James Fitton and Jack Harrington showed great promise and went close to goal several times.
Engleman scored in a 1-1 draw with Ben Rhydding ‘A’ before York lost 2-0 to Ben Rhydding ‘B’, 1-0 to Bradford ‘A’ and 2-0 Airedale ‘A’.
Harrington was the scorer as York beat Slazengers ‘A’ 1-0 in their final game.
The boys ‘B’ team beat Halifax 1-0 but then lost to Driffield, Leeds, Bridlington and Kirklees.
