BOTH City of York Hockey Club under-10s’ boys’ teams excelled in the latest round of youth matches.

The ‘A’-team shrugged off an opening match loss by winning the other four matches they played, while the ‘B’-team posted five wins and a draw from their six outings.

Defeat for the ‘A’-team came in their opening tussle, which they lost 2-0 to eventual league winners Airedale, who pipped York to the crown by a single point.

But then York turned up the power to beat Leeds 3-0, Ben Rhydding ‘A’ 1-0, Hull 1-0 and Ben Rhydding ‘B’ 3-0 in what was the best sequence of play they had enjoyed all season.

Joe Inman had his scoring boots on, scoring all three against Leeds and bagging against Ben Rhydding, while Alistair Brown was outstanding throughout.

The ‘B’-ranks also revelled in a brilliant day.

Drawing one match, they prevailed in all the others and effectively won everything on aggregate as they played each team twice. They beat Chapeltown ‘A’ 2-0 in both meetings, drew 0-0 and then won 1-0 against Chapeltown ‘B’ and posted 4-0 and 2-0 triumphs over Airedale ‘B’ in a tournament victory for team-work.

The York U10 girls’ ‘A’ team beat Ben Rhydding ‘B’ 1-0 and Adel 4-0, drew 2-2 and 1-1 with Wakefield and Rotherham respectively, and lost just once, 3-1 to Ben Rhydding ‘A’.

However, the U10 girls’ ‘B’ team lost all five of their fixtures.

City were beaten 4-0 by Kirklees, 1-0 to Thirsk, 2-0 to Sheffield, 3-0 to Leeds and 1-0 to Wakefield ‘B’.
