A FIVE-GAME winning streak carried City of York Hockey Club under-16 boys to glory in the Yorkshire Youth Hockey League play-offs.

The squad played five matches at Park Lane High School, in Halifax, winning all five to be crowned champions.

The play-offs are contested by the top eight sides in the Yorkshire Youth League, in which City of York finished second behind Driffield.

At Halifax, York were initially in a group with sides from Ben Rhydding, Rotherham and Sheffield Hallam, winning 2-1, 5-0 and 1-0 respectively.

York started slowly in their opening game, but goals from Lewis Mortimer and Seb Murgatroyd, the first of seven on his birthday, saw the team get off the mark.

In the second match, City of York’s counter-attacking qualities tore the Rotherham defence to ribbons and four goals from Murgatroyd and one from Harry Dixon put the gloss on a superb display.

Having already qualified for the semi-finals, they won the final group game against Sheffield Hallam by one goal, Murgatroyd scoring again.

They then played Doncaster in the semi-final, winning 3-1.

Down to the bare bones, City of York were given a boost when a goalbound effort was brilliantly saved on the line by defender Elliott Colley.

This spurred York into action and they took a two-goal lead with a neat finish from Longster and a penalty-corner strike by skipper Myles Rawlings.

Doncaster pulled one back to set up an interesting last few minutes, but solid goalkeeping by Jordan Nelson kept the South Yorkshire side at bay. Longster then settled the outcome with his second goal.

They faced Ben Rhydding again in the final and came away with a 2-1 success.

Ben Rhydding took the lead, but Longster pounced to level when a penalty corner was saved.

And with time running out, Jack Purrington’s pass was fired in by Murgatroyd.
