YORK-based Team Jorvik’s annual swimming gala was a roaring success.

The club’s Viking Sprints attracted 20 rival clubs and 433 swimmers who between them registered 1,872 swims at the Leeds Aquatic Centre.

After 36 different event across Grades ‘A’, ‘B’ and ‘C’, Doncaster Dartes lifted the top club trophy with 825 points from 88 swimmers, with York City Baths Club finishing second after a titanic struggle with Team Jorvik, who were third. The host club sent out a team of 44 swimmers, who took part in 196 swims and notched 114 personal bests – a sterling performance from one of the newest teams in the region.

Jorvik kicked off with a gold for Isobel Scott in the first event – the girls 11, 12 and 15-plus individual medley (IM).

There were also golds in the final event – boys 15-plus backstroke – for both Tom McGlashan and coach Darren Burchell. Bagging gold in between were Ryan Martin (2), Jack Dorland, Michele Schultz, Jordan Littlewood (2), Max Nozedar (2), Megan Burrow, Georgia Kemp, Rachel Dunmore, Charlotte Heeles, Andrew Cowan (2), Fran Sanderson and Andrew Taylor. Top swimmers for the club by age group were Esme Littlewood (nine), Lewis Elliott (nine), Georgia Kemp (ten), Daniel Roberts (ten), Megan Burrow (12), Angus Byrne (12), Rachel Dunmore (13), Ryan Martin (13), Fran Sanderson (14), Jordan Littlewood (14), Michele Schultz (15-plus) and Andrew Taylor (15-plus). Taylor also picked up the Top Boy award for his age group. Andrew Cowan (freestyle), Jack Dorland (IM), Jordan Littlewood (IM) and Max Nozedar (IM, freestyle, butterfly) had speeding tickets slapped on them for beating the Grade ‘A’ cut-off times, putting them among the best in the region on the day. Ten swimmers – Abigail Bradley, Andrew Cowan, Tomasz Dobrzycki, Jenny Harrison, Emily Hill, Jordan Littlewood, Harry Nozedar, Max Nozedar, Daniel Roberts and Rhiannon Wood – managed a clean sweep of PBs. Among the other swimmers recording more than one PB were Kayleigh Brown and Olivia Gill. Also in the medals were Abigail Bradley (three bronzes), Matthew Bradley (bronze), Tomasz Dobrzycki (silver and bronze), Lauren Gill (bronze), Melissa Hill (two silvers), Gemma Martin (silver), Josephine Roberts (bronze), Michael Tansini (bronze) and Shelley Taylor (silver). Christian Brennan, Gemma Burrow, Laura Elliott, Lewis Elliott, Ellie Summers, Elliott Thurland and Chris Unsworth all placed in the top six in at least one event. One in five of the Team Jorvik contingent, were rookies and all produced at least one PB.

Competing for the first time were sisters Francis and Eleanor Dook, Jack Dorland, Jenny Harrison, Emily Hill, Fran Sanderson and Rhiannon Wood. The squad also welcomed the first home-grown graduates from the team’s Swim Academy, Natasha Sanderson, and Catriona Scott.
