Rufforth Reds and Yorkies are the first-ever victors in the York and District Netball Junior Summer League.

The two teams each beat four rivals to take top spot in their divisions of the four-week tournament at Manor School, in which participants were split into two age categories.

Girls from Years 7 and 8 made up the younger section and the squads, only made up this summer, represented clubs and schools from across York and Harrogate.

Yorgate, J Jems and The Marvels all performed well, but a thrilling final was contested between Rufforth Reds and The Millers, with the Reds pipping their opponents.

Emily Farrow, of Rufforth, received the umpire-voted Girl of the Tournament accolade.

The older girls then took to the stage, with Year 9 and 10 girls competing for their league title.

The young umpires used in the earlier tournament continued to take charge, mentored by qualified officials.

There was no similar success this time for the Rufforth Reds who finished fifth in this age group, behind Jo Ro Blues, Eborgate, Ninja Turtles and Yorkies, who were the overall champions.

Faye Whitely from the Ninja Turtles was the Girl of the Tournament.

A winter league will now be run in Manor’s sports hall, starting at the end of September. Matches will be played on one Tuesday of each month.
