PUPILS at York’s St Olave’s and St Peter’s Schools have been in winning form – scooping four different events in just one weekend.

At the K2 Centre, in Crawley, a team of ten from St Olave’s were among 210 schools which took part in the finals of the IAPS National Swimming Championships.

Katarina Bonner became national champion in the girls’ U11 and under 50m backstroke – knocking 1.3 seconds off her personal best time and, in a fantastic race, came from third to first in the last ten metres.

Both St Olave’s and St Peter’s won the overall title at the Independent Schools’ Athletics Competition, held at York’s Huntington Stadium.

“With 15 schools, from the North of England, entering this event, it makes the results even more impressive,” said Steve Williams, head of sport at St Peter’s.

Both the St Peter’s third and fourth form athletes had a very successful day.

The third form girls were first overall with individual wins from Helen Megone (1500m), Libby Brown (800m), Pippa Martin (200m, discus) and the relay team.

The fourth form team also came first with individual successes from Harriet Falshaw (300m), Minna Gabbertas (200m) and second place for Georgie Ward (javelin) and Ellie Martin (shot put).

In the same competition, the U12 and U13 girls’ teams from St Olave’s were also victorious.

“It was a great team effort and the girls were once again a real credit to the school,” said head of girls’ sport, Yvonne Dyson.

Elsewhere, pupil Isaac Philips and his U12s hockey team, the Sheffield Lasers, became national champions.

A dozen St Peter’s girls who represented the school at the English Schools’ Track and Field Cup are celebrating qualifying for the next round.

In the first event, they secured 292 points which placed them third overall in the North East of England.
