BRIONY HARRISON proved to be the catch of the day when claiming the York Junior Angling Championships.
Held at New Walk Terrace, between Blue Bridge and Millennium Bridge on the River Ouse in the city, 13 hot rods took to the water in a bid to claim the crown.
Harrison’s 3lb 12oz haul won the event, which is traditionally held on the first Friday of the new river season.
Competition took place in three categories and the junior prize went to J Gunn with 1lb 10oz.
Other top performers were R Tinsen (1lb) and Liam Surgenor (12oz).
The youngest competitor was five-year-old Charlie-George Darling, who weighed in with a creditable haul of 8½ ounces.
Mike Longhurst, York Amalgamation treasurer and a level 2 junior coach who helped to organise the championships, said: “Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves and the tackle shops gave us great support.
“It was a really successful day and we have another junior match arranged with the council in July as part of the Festival of Rivers.”
