NEW Earswick All Blacks ARLC will be eager to continue new-found winning ways on Saturday when they host Nevison Leap in Pennine League championship.

All Blacks will be without Kyle Lowson but could welcome back Liam Davidson and Sam Waite, while Alan Davidson will have a fitness check. Nevison won 48-12 the last time the sides met, but the York outfit got back on the victory trail for the first time since December 1 when they beat third-placed Knottingley Rockware 24-20 last week.

All Blacks, wearing their new kit in memory of late club chairman Phil ‘OJ’ Johnson, never trailed after loose-forward Joe Davis powered in to give them the lead, but Rockware were always on their coattails.

Other home tries came from stand-off Tom Holmes, fed by centre Sean Malarkey who had gathered a neat chip, Malarkey himself, finishing a well-worked move down the right, and Holmes again, to add to his four goals. Hooker Jack Carling and centre Adam Kirby also stood out.

Meanwhile, York Acorn and Heworth continue building up to their National Conference campaigns, at home to Myton (2pm) and away to Normanton (2pm) respectively.

Acorn, promoted to the premier division, are seeking improvements after losing their friendly at Shaw Cross last week, and face an excellent examination against last season’s top-tier grand finalists, while Heworth will look for more promising signs after a 44-10 win over Gateshead Storm.

Acorn coach Scott Rhodes said: “It was a rusty performance last week, thogh the conditions weren’t great. We didn’t perform in some key areas and bombed quite a few chances. This game will show where we’re at regarding the premier division.”

Heworth spokesman Ken Sykes said: “This will be sterner against a National Conference side and will give us a few more pointers as to where we are.”

The Andy Wells Memorial Trophy returns to the fore in the Selby area with semi-finals taking place on Saturday. Selby Warriors go to Wetherby Bulldogs, while Brotherton host Sherburn Bears.

Selby Warriors ‘A’ face a tough test at home to second-placed Halifax Irish ‘A’ in Pennine League division seven – but confidence will be good following their best display of the season and a 28-16 win over third-placed Illingworth ‘A’.

The Selby forwards were tremendous, led by first-team coach Kevin Fellows, who was helping the side out, and second-team coach Jay Shaw.

The star of the show, however, was full-back Danny England, who scored a hat-trick and booted six goals. Jacob Scales got the other touchdown, while 16-year-old Rob Howard impressed at scrum-half.
