SELBY Warriors ARLC are hoping to end their disappointing season on a high note at local level.
The Warriors, who must wait another week to complete their Pennine League programme, are to be relegated from Pennine League division one after only two wins all term.
But they at least toppled Heworth ‘A’ in the York & District Cup semi-final last week so are in with a shout of silverware.
The game began badly for Warriors as Mark Hanson broke an arm, with a youthful Heworth side soon going 10-0 up.
However, 16-year-old half-back Chaz Fothergill and the experienced Wayne Fennell began to boss proceedings, creating gaps for Scott Birch, Matt Stevenson and the returning Zennon Horrox.
From one, Stevenson fed Steve Wilks to race 30 metres and send Fennell home, Gary Watkinson adding the first of his six goals.
Sixteen-year-old prop Ben Copeland set the platform for Jason Roberts to score, Wilks acrobatically touched down in the corner, Stevenson crossed and Fennell finished a flowing move for a 30-10 turnaround.
Heworth replied but Danny England scored after a 70-yard run and Ben Hopkins dropped a goal to cap the victory.
Wilks, Scott Birch, David Makin, Spencer Turner, Horrox, Fothergill, Copeland and captain Fennell all stood out.
Ten-man Selby Warriors ‘A’ suffered a cup loss, a decent line-up featuring some players from Nevison Leap losing 36-20 to Sherburn Bears in a bruising and controversial Selby Cup tie.
Selby tries came from David Lockwood, after good work by Steve Laurie, Alex Dunwell, Paul Scott and veteran forward Lee Bennett, with two goals added by Sean Simpson.
However, they had Danny Milton, Jamie Willis and Jason Dunwell all sent off and Sherburn came from 10-0 down to win it, through tries by stand-off Sam Booth, following up his own grubber, Kev Dalton, Ben Pugh, with a hat-trick, captain Ray Boyes, with his first of the season, and, after a series of Sherburn misses, Daniel Johnson.
Martin Leahy added four conversions.
Veteran Paul Berriman was Selby’s man of the match, livewire full-back Pugh taking the Bears’ accolade.
Selby ‘A’ go to Odsal ‘A’ in division seven this Saturday.
