Heworth ARLC A' team are still in the hunt for a play-off place in Yorkshire League division three despite dropping a point at home to lowly Castleford Panthers A'.

The Villagers were never at their best in a 22-22 draw, a scrappy encounter not helped by a number of baffling decisions by the Halifax official, and needed a tremendous try from man of the match Gary Watkinson to nick a point, though he could not add the extras from out wide to win it.

Cas had led 6-4 at the break, young stand-off Gareth Watson posting Heworth's only try. He got a second after the interval when stealing the ball in a one-on-one tackle, and Marcus Allan then crashed over for Watkinson to convert to give Heworth a 14-6 lead.

In a game littered with penalties, Panthers levelled before Watkinson broke the deadlock with a forceful run for a four-pointer.

Poor defensive play allowed the visitors to go ahead with a converted try and penalty, before Watkinson rescued the hosts with a 40-metre run for his second try.

Rich Darling, Rich Rogers and Jake Humble tried hard in a below-par performance which leaves the Villagers fifth but still able to get into the top four if they win their games in hand.
