JOINT leaders New Earswick All Blacks ARLC picked up their third away win of the season when they beat hosts Dearne Valley 24-18 in Pennine League division one east.
All three of New Earswick’s wins have come on the road and they staved off a concerted come-back from 12-man Dearne Valley to claim the points.
The visitors started brightly and took the lead after quick hands down the line put Dean Layton in at the corner for an unconverted try.
All Blacks widened their advantage midway through the half when centre Ben Dent powered his way over from close range, with stand-off Max Brachen converting.
A penalty for a high shot, converted by Brachen, extended the All Blacks’ superiority.
New Earswick scored two more tries before the break, with centre Adam Kirby running through a gap in the defence to cross and then prop Brian Wright stretching his way over.
Both tries were converted by Brachen to give the All Blacks a 24-0 half-time lead.
Dearne Valley hit back in the second half, scoring three tries despite having a player sent off. That closed the gap to six points, but the All Blacks held on.
Man of the match for New Earswick was loose-forward Carl Barrow, while there were also strong performances from Kirby and full-back Joe Stearman.
The division three match between New Earswick ‘A’ and Siddal ‘B’ was postponed due to a Siddal bereavement.
Selby Warriors’ unbeaten start to the division four campaign ended in a 30-28 defeat at Sheffield Hillsborough Hawks.
The Warriors raced into a 12-0 lead in as many minutes and later led 28-12 in the second half, but they lost the game in the dying moments.
Wayne Fennell opened the scoring after a break by Ryan Eades and Richard Stead got the goal.
Straight from the kick-off, Eades turned try-scorer, scooting over from acting half for Stead to goal.
Sheffield got back into the game with a try before half-time.
In the second half, youngster Josh Parkin capped a fine display with a try from acting half and Stead again goaled.
The hosts added another touch-down, but then Selby centre Steve Wilkes scored after a good ball from Scott Pearson. Stead again goaled.
Pearson was next on the scoresheet after a jinking ten-yard run and the game appeared to be over as Warriors led 28-12.
However, the impossible happened as Sheffield scored three converted tries in the last ten minutes, the last with only two minutes left.
There was no game for Selby ‘A’ in division seven.
York Acorn ‘A’ were 28-16 winners at Milford Marlins ‘A’ in CMS Yorkshire League division two, while Heworth ‘A’ went down 24-16 at Ryhill Hammers in division three.
The home side led 6-4 at the break, with the Villagers’ score coming from an Eddie Phillips try following a good pass from Kenny Embleton.
After the break, the outstanding Paul Gill burst through to score a try and Gary Watkinson converted to put Heworth in front.
The hosts bounced back to restore their lead with a converted try before Heworth skipper Joe Murphy dashed over for a try goaled by Watkinson.
However, responded with a try and goal and, in a frantic finale, the Hammers sealed the game with a breakaway try.
Murphy, Gill and Watkinson led from the front and were well supported by Karl Southerington, Tom Hirst and Mark Plaxton.
