A ROUSING rally rocketed Selby Warriors to a thumping triple treasure trove.
The never-day-side Warriors countered from a 10-0 deficit to defeat New Earswick All Blacks 18-10 and add the York and District Amateur Rugby League Cup to a bulging trophy cabinet that also includes the Andrew Bennett Memorial Trophy and the Selby and District Challenge Cup.
With the Warriors also gaining promotion to Pennine League division two, the season has been a memorable one for the Selby ranks.
Against New Earswick, Selby were largely pegged back as their rivals started the sharper.
Forcing the Warriors to defend three back-to-back sets, the All Blacks gained the lead when scrum-half Liam Gargan crossed with winger Carl Fernandez converting.
That lead was extended to 10-0 early in the second half with Gargan again crossing.
But, inspired by coach Paul Helstrip, Selby hit back with two tries in ten minutes to level.
Wayne Fennell got the Warriors out of the blocks with a chip over and touch down followed by hitman Justin Priest’s effort, which was converted by Gavyn Lightowler.
As panic set in among the home ranks Selby gained the lead with a drop goal from Lightowler with 15 minutes left and extended their lead with a converted try.
Selby’s big men were uncompromising in Mark Hanson, Jon Broadhurst, Zennon Horrox and Matt Stevenson, while Jason Roberts worked hard at hooker.
Full-back Lightowler, who was well supported by centres Matt Irving and Richard Stead, added a further drop goal to seal their cup success.
All Blacks' man of the match was half-back Gargan, while there were strong performances too from hooker Jack Carling and second-rower Bobby Quigley.
