YORK Lokomotive ARLC anticipate a rough-and-tumble encounter as they look to continue winning ways in the RL Conference Yorkshire premier east division.

The Lokos bounced back from defeat to triumph 18-14 at Rotherham Giants on Saturday and this weekend they entertain a Moorends Thorne side whose winning start to the season ended against Scarborough Pirates last time out.

Lokos spokesman Paul Boyne said: “It’s usually a rough, tough game against these. They don’t give any quarter. It should be a good match.”

While the Marauders were losing 36-18 to Scarborough, the Lokos pipped Rotherham thanks largely to a man-of-the-match performance from Jim Mulroney.

The prop scored two of their tries and began the spectacular move that led to a touchdown, in between times, for Arron Thompson.

Mulroney’s opener was goaled by Gary Watkinson and, although the Giants equalised, hooker Thompson finished a six-man move that began in the Lokos’ own 30-metre area for a 10-6 interval lead.

Mulroney’s second try, plus a conversion and then a penalty by Watkinson, made it 18-6 and the Lokos, with second-row Matthew Chapman and loose-forward Jon Hough also standing out, kept the spoils despite a further try, conversion and penalty at the other end.

The York RI-based team, however, suffered a big blow as an accidental clash of heads in a tackle left prop Ian Cairns with a broken nose and needing 15 stitches in a bizarre gash around his mouth. The RAF man will miss this weekend’s match and centre Zak Hardy is also a big doubt after suffering concussion in the same incident.

Forward Nathan Pincher and half-back Tom Gargan should be available again and come into contention.

Meanwhile, New Earswick All Blacks first team and ‘A’ teams will hold their presentation event at the club’s White Rose Avenue headquarters on Sunday, starting at 2pm.

The afternoon will see a tag team challenge with All Blacks under-17s and open-age players taking on an All Blacks over-35s team. This fun event will be followed by a hog roast before the awards ceremony. Tickets are £10 and can be bought on the day.
