ROSS DIVORTY and his Wales team-mates gave a very creditable display but lost 36-0 in the first match of today's Four Nations double-header at Wembley.
Watched from the stands by dad Gary Divorty, who scored at Wembley as a 17-year-old in the 1985 Challenge Cup final, the 22-year-old forward, who is York born and bred but has a Welsh grandmother, entered the fray as a substitute – like he had in the 42-4 defeat to England last week - after 23 minutes.
This time, due to injuries, he stayed on for the remainder of the match, playing in the second row and at prop.
By then big favourite New Zealand were already three tries to the good, through Jason Nightingale, Kevin Locke and Sika Manu and, while the Welsh pack put some big hits in and got a foothold in the game, further Kiwi tries came from Manu, Gerard Beale and, with the only touchdowns of a well-contested second half, Beale again and Nathan Fien. Benji Marshall added four goals.
