York Acorn ARLC ‘A’ will bid to hang on to the coat-tails of Yorkshire Men’s League group three leaders East Hull when they play Holderness Vikings on Saturday.
Neighbours Heworth ‘A’ host Hull Dockers ‘A’ in the same division, with the Villagers’ second string looking to get over the line this time after a superb second-half show last week saw them narrowly lose 30-28 at Ovenden ‘A’.
Heworth had taken the lead through Henry Newitt’s try but Ovenden went 20-6 up and Dan Craig’s score still left them trailing 26-12 at the break.
In the second period, Heworth were quickly on the scoreboard as Craig finished well after latching on to a Wayne Foster pass to touch down and he completed his hat-trick following a kick from Ross Varley.
Ovenden rallied to add a try but Newitt ensured an exciting finale when he picked up a loose ball and outpaced the defence in a 60 metre run to score in the corner – only for his side to come up two points short at the end.
York Lokomotiv, who have only played one game so far in group three, face a stern test at home to East Hull ‘A’.
Player coach Liam Watling, meanwhile, undergoes major surgery on his knee today and hopes to be back playing in 12 months.
