NEW Earswick All Blacks ARLC youngster Jack Sinclair helped the BARLA Great Britain Cougars beat Jamaica 56-28 to wrap up a 2-0 Test series triumph in the Caribbean.
As reported by The Press, Sinclair sat out the opening Test but scored two tries in the warm-up match, with sprint star Usain Bolt looking on, and kept his place on the wing for the second Test which the under-23s won at the GC Foster College Stadium in Kingston.
Jamaica came from 16-8 down to be level at the break – Sinclair being denied a try when bundled into touch on the half-time hooter – but the Cougars cut loose in the second period.
BARLA chairman Spen Allison, from York, said: “The tour has been exceptional. I think the Jamaican guys gave us a fantastic contest and the winner is rugby league.
“I am pleased BARLA have again crossed foreign soil to promote the game and help to develop this great sport. I would also like to thank the Jamaican guys for the hospitality towards us.”
Former Archbishop Holgate’s School pupil Ross Divorty, the former York City Knights back-rower now with Halifax, played at loose-forward as Wales put up a brave show in losing 28-16 to France.
Dringhouses youngster Pat Smith, who played for Sheffield Eagles, started at hooker for Ireland but they fell 62-4 to England Knights in the curtain-raiser to England’s win over The Exiles at St Helens’ Langtree Park.
YORK Acorn ARLC decided not to send a young ‘A’ team to Fryston Warriors and so forfeited their Yorkshire Men’s League Community Shield tie.
Acorn’s second string had several players unavailable and others out injured and so would have had to call in a number of under-18s, but decided not to throw them into the lion’s den away to a tough Fryston side who head the league’s premier division.
York Lokomotive crashed 50-0 to a strong Normanton Knights ‘A’ side in group three. It was only the Lokos’ second game of the league campaign due to call-offs and a stuttering fixture list.
