Pocklington RUFC saw their North One East hope snatched from their grasp as Sheffield grabbed a stoppage-time score to win 18-14 at Percy Road.
Pocklington gave Sheffield an eight-point start, then produced an immense effort to fight back against an experienced side that sit third in the table. They led by a single point into stoppage time before Sheffield’s late rally snatched it.
Eight points down inside five minutes after Sheffield kicked an early penalty and followed with an overlap try, the hosts finally got their act together.
After centre Jake Bishop made two diagonal breaks, the ball came back out along the back where lively hooker Ben Stephenson broke clear to score. Full-back Joe Holbrough converted.
But in the last minute of the half Sheffield pressed again and Pocklington had a forward sent to the sin-bin.
The visitors capitalised to rumble over from close range and lead 13-7 at the break.
Pocklington took the game to Sheffield in the second period but the vistors were adept at soaking up pressure until home blind side Matt Davies came away with the ball from a scrum and strolled over unopposed. Holbrough’s conversion drilled Pocklington back into the lead.
After being hurled back ten times, Sheffield managed to move the ball wide to squeeze in at the corner.
