A “DIFFERENT proposition” awaits Malton & Norton RUFC tomorrow when they host in-form Cleckheaton at The Gannock.
Head coach Chris Creber’s men have been going try-scoring crazy in the last two matches – racking up 50 points against both Durham City and Darlington.
But both those sides were struggling at the foot of the North One East table and, while the results and the nature of the performances have naturally increased confidence, club chiefs are in no doubt they face a much stiffer test against their West Yorkshire opponents this weekend.
Cleckheaton have seen off the league’s top two in Beverley and Morley in consecutive weeks and, having dealt with Malton earlier in the season in a 30-23 home victory, will be confident of achieving a league double.
This is a much stronger Gannock outfit now, though, said club spokesman Bill Laidler, who believes it will be a close encounter this time.
“We played well but they didn’t play great,” he said of last weekend’s vanquished opponents Durham. “We didn’t concede much – two tries – so there was improvement there from the week before but Cleckheaton will be a different proposition.
“It will be very tough but it will be a tight game. We are a lot stronger than we were earlier in the season. We know we can score tries now and a lot of it has been down to not having to change personnel.”
Henry Newitt and Paul Dobson are both unavailable against Cleckheaton and will be replaced by Ali Heard and Adam Turnbull respectively.
After two wins in successive weeks against North East opponents, Pocklington will be hoping to put clear water between them and the teams below them in the North One East table by beating struggling Durham at home.
Pocklington were given a tough game when they went to Durham in October, coming from behind to edge a late 21-18 victory, but Durham have found points hard to come by and look doomed to relegation. Last week, they conceded 106 points against Beverley.
The Percy Roaders have vice-captain Ben Rees back in the squad after playing 20 minutes for the Pilgrims last Saturday following three months out after a knee operation.
York, who collected valuable points in a 16-3 win against Heath last time out, will be looking to close the gap on third-placed Wath-upon-Dearne in Yorkshire One.
Selby are without a game in Yorkshire Two this week while York RI will be trying to regain some pride in Yorkshire Three.
The Railwaymen were hammered 62-0 at Old Modernians last week. This time, their travels take them to Rotherham Phoenix.
