SELBY RUFC at last returned to something like their pre-Christmas form with a 25-5 Yorkshire Two victory over Pocklington.

The experience of the home side was significant against a visiting team fielding only one player aged over 30.

Selby props Andrew Pocklington and the brave Dave Christison, who played despite a broken thumb, were both immense.

Stand-off Dan Porter marked his return to action with a well struck penalty, but Pock forced Selby to defend a series of pick-up and drives at their line.

League leaders Selby moved further ahead when they overturned the ball and it sped across the backs to Rob Arnold who turned it back inside for former York RL man Shaun Austerfield to dive in.

Shortly after that a poor Pock clearance just found the home scrum-half Russ Dovey and once again quick hands across the backs saw skipper Andy Bennett cross for his first score of the season to leave Selby comfortable at 13-0 up at half time.

Pocklington piled on the pressure in the second half and three times they refused kicks at goal as they opted to run the ball.

They were rewarded when Henry Mitchell's cross kick into oceans of space was gathered by Sam Butcher who offloaded to the speedy Nick Bennett who went over despite the presence of tackler Austerfield.

Selby realised that they were in a contest and this spurred their forwards who drove into the heart of the Pock territory then rumbled on, with the backs showing again their flair and pace the ball moved across the line for Sam Weller to finish the move in the corner.

Selby were then forced to defend for a period and it was at this stage that Selby used all their experience to keep the willing young Pock pack at bay with old warhorse Paul Rhodes knitting his forwards together and stealing the ball.

The Sandhill Lane men finally closed the game out when with clever inter-passing in the backs the ball finished in Austerfield's hands. He drew three defenders and cleverly offloaded for supporting flanker Richard Nicholson to cross under the posts. Porter comfortably converted to complete the scoring.
