FREE-SCORING Malton & Norton RUFC secured their place in Yorkshire One with a 69-9 victory over Skipton.

The Gannock mauling confirmed Skipton’s relegation and put the seal on an amazing turnaround in form for the home side, who looked down and out earlier in the campaign.

Teei Piawi celebrated his 21st birthday by converting an early penalty for Malton, and he also converted the opening try from fly-half Chris Creber.

Front-rower Liam Vaughan was next to cross and Piawi again added the extras.

Skipton hit back with a penalty, but normal service was resumed when prop Adam Turnbull went over the line and he was quickly followed by winger Marcel Anthony and Piawi converted from the touchline.

Centre Ryan Lonsdale exploited a half chance to power over for the final try of the half, while Skipton kicked a penalty on half-time to make it 36-6.

With four minutes of the second half gone, Lonsdale crossed and Piawi added to his tally. Ten minutes later, winger Nick Bastow got his name on the scoresheet after a Piawi break.

Sam Triffitt got in on the act from the base of a scrum and dead-eye Piawi again converted.

Skipton reduced the deficit with another penalty when Malt were caught offside, but the respite was brief as Triffitt bagged his second and Piawi converted. With the game drawing to a close, flanker George Nutt was on hand for a fully deserved try and Piawi converted to spark the home side’s celebrations.

Selby are still two points from safety after an agonising 19-17 defeat at Sheffield, which saw the hosts snatch victory in the last minute.

The Swans opened the scoring at Abbeydale when skipper Rob Taylor rounded off a superb move and fly-half Chris Quinn converted.

Flanker Jim Nicholson was next to cross for Selby, but spilled ball allowed Sheffield to notch a converted score. The visitors produced another try out of the top drawer, with winger Alex Arthur finishing.

The hosts camped in Selby’s half for long periods of the second period and they claimed a converted try.

Selby’s superb defence stood firm until five minutes into injury time, when Sheffield scored a vital try.

A late penalty attempt from the visitors fell short.

At the opposite end of the table, York maintained their superb end-of-season form with a 17-11 victory at Keighley.

The visitors’ defence withstood tremendous pressure in the first half and emerged 7-6 in front, with Billy Cakaunitabua’s try and Paul Williams’ conversion cancelling out two Keighley penalties.

After the break, Williams added a penalty before Keighley took the lead with a try in the left corner.

York’s response was instant as a flowing team move was rounded off by Alex Nixon, and Williams converted.

The hosts again pushed for a winning score, camping near the York line, but again the awesome defence refused to buckle.

The Clifton Parkers are now a point behind third-placed Castleford with a game in hand.

Full-back Tim Bennett celebrated his 18th birthday with a second half hat-trick as Pocklington beat Hessle 39-12 in Yorkshire Two.

Bennett’s elder brother, Nick, added a penalty and three conversions, while Pock’s other touchdowns went to strong running centre Jack Holbrough (2) and powerful scrum-half Ben Rees.

York RI had no game, but were knocked off the top of Yorkshire Four by Rotherham Phoenix.
