STEPHEN MAGUIRE lived up to his ‘on fire’ nickname with a devastating display of scoring as he booked a last 16 Coral UK Championship clash against David Morris.
The Scotsman, who won the UK in York in 2004, was electric in a 6-2 win over Mark Williams - opening with 64 before producing a superb break of 132 in the second frame.
Deadly from range, and ruthless in the balls, Maguire added efforts of 90, 87 and 80 as he confined the Welshman to his chair for much of the third round clash.
Williams said Maguire would be hard to stop at the York Barbican if he could carry on that form but, while elated with his performance, the 33-year-old Maguire was cautious about getting too carried away with the victory.
He said: “That’s the best I have played in a full match for a good few months now. I felt good - safety, long potting - I felt as if I was scoring well.
“I am pleased with that performance. I had a couple of hours practise last night (Monday) and nicked another hour and just felt, as soon as I went out there, relaxed and not edgy.
“I just felt good. Long may it continue.
“If I play like that someone is going to have to play well but I have done it all before - you play like that and then you play rubbish in the next match.
“I’ll not get carried away. I will hopefully keep it up.”
