YORK City manager Michael Morton has been relieved of his duties.

Following York’s disappointing 3-1 defeat to Rochdale at the LNER Community Stadium, manager Morton has been sacked after holding a conversation with owner Matt Uggla.

Morton admitted after the match that he would be willing to do what is best for the club, after the manager and players were told shortly after his post-match press conference.

The former York manager was instated originally as assistant manager to ex-boss David Webb, and helped cover Webb in matches when Webb was suffering from covid-19.

Following Webb’s sacking last February, Morton was place in interim charge before becoming the club’s permanent manager, helping steer York to safety on the final day of the season in a 1-1 draw with Notts County.

Morton was backed by the new ownership to take City into their new regime, after bringing in 17 new players, and has been dismissed after six games into the new season.

York currently find themselves in 23rd position and on three points, only ahead of Southend United due to the club’s points deduction.

City are also the only side in the National League to have not yet won a match.

Morton ends his reign with the club with a 25 per cent win ratio, having won six of his 24 matches in charge, with the club set to begin their search for a new manager immediately.

However, Morton has been offered a new role internally within the club, which is yet to be accepted.

Assistant manager Tony McMahon will take charge of first-team duties until a new manager is permanently appointed.

The club said on their official website: "York City FC has this evening parted company with first team manager Mikey Morton.

"The Club has reluctantly taken the decision to relieve Mikey Morton of his duties.

"The Club wishes to place on record its sincere thanks to Mikey for his work, passion, and commitment since joining the Club in February.

"We wish Mikey every success in his future career, and he will always be welcome back at the LNER community stadium.

"The club see Mikey as an asset and have offered him a role internally so await his decision.

"The club will now begin the process of recruiting a new first team manager.

"In the meantime, assistant Manager Tony McMahon will take charge of the first team supported by first team staff."
