FORMER York City manager Steve Watson is back in football.
Watson, who managed York for two years between 2019 and 2021, has returned to the Vanarama National League North with Darlington.
Darlington parted ways with manager Josh Gowling on Boxing Day after a dismal spell of form, which saw the former Bournemouth defender manage just three victories in 19 matches.
The Quakers now find themselves in a concerning 23rd position and within the relegation zone after 24 matches, with eight points separating Darlington and Rushall Olympic in 20th place.
Watson has previous experience with the division having managed both York and Chester, as well as with Gateshead in the Vanarama National League, finishing in 12th position and then in second place in his two seasons with the Minstermen.
York fell to a 1-0 defeat to Altrincham as City lost out in the play-offs, with Watson remaining with the club until November before departing.
Watson was never able to complete a full season with York due to the coronavirus pandemic, with a 0-0 draw with Curzon Ashton being the final straw for the City board.
Speaking on his move to the club, Watson told the club media team: "I've thought long and hard about my career, took a step back for a year or so and worked in an academy in Newcastle just to improve my coaching and learn new and different ways.
"I've had some fantastic times there but in the back of my mind I've always wanted to get back into really competitive football, and this is an opportunity that is made for me.
"We look like a team at the moment really lacking in confidence and belief, and that's something that we need to turn around.
"Belief and confidence comes with results in football, so that first win for me and with the way that we're going to start to play.
"It's going to take a lot of hard work and we are going to need you with us.
"I've got experience at doing this and I wouldn't be sitting here if I didn't think it was possible."
Darlington Chief Executive David Johnston was equally as pleased to have Watson at the club, saying: "It’s been a very difficult week for the club, and we’re now proud to announce Steve as our new manager.
“Steve has worked for clubs in this league and has a proven track record. He understands what this league is all about and what needs to be done.”
