NEIL COX plans to get York City's supporters bums off of seats with a more enticing match this afternoon with Dagenham & Redbridge.
After an irking 1-0 defeat to Dorking Wanderers in midweek, Cox is expecting a reaction from his York side in Saturday’s clash with Dagenham & Redbridge, as the Minstermen look to claw further clear from the Vanarama National League relegation zone.
The York assistant manager has been pleased with the reaction he’s seen in training, and remains confident that the squad’s spirit remains high, but also wants City to play to a higher tempo against a confident Dagenham side.
“The fans want to be stood up and enjoying the game, they don’t want to be sat down,” Cox enthused.
“So that’s what we need to do, we need to enjoy the game and I think we did at times the other night, it was just our final ball into the danger area which let us down.
“We had a couple of chances, didn’t take them and got counter-attacked.
“If we came off at 0-0 we would have been disappointed, but we would have taken four points from two games.
“We have to play with a tempo, we have to play with a lot more quality and we have to go forward to create chances.
“We were really disappointed really, we created enough opportunities to win the game but just didn’t take them, that was our problem on the night.
“We get beat, everybody is distraught and the fans have given a little bit of strict, that’s the way it is at the minute.
“We’ve spoken to the boys this morning, but when we first came to this football club there had been seven games gone and we only had three points.
“You have to come in and be ready for the next challenge, this is another challenge for us and we need everybody on our side.
“We spoke to the players and everybody has got to keep going, we need the fans on our side and we’re going to need them even more this season.
“It’s a tough run for everybody, there are a lot of teams still fighting, but if the fans get behind us at home then it will be beneficial for us.
“The boys were a little bit disappointed in themselves for Tuesday night, but that’s the main thing that they were disappointed with, as nobody likes to get booed off.
“We’ve told them to roll their sleeves up and get on with another home game.”
Cox also gave his assessment of Dagenham & Redbridge and what York can expect, with the City assistant expecting a Daggers side that are vying for revenge following the reverse fixture.
“We have to be hardworking and hard to beat, but also to be positive on the front foot whilst going forward.
“We know how they play, they are a good footballing side and they will be hurt after we beat them at their place, so they’ll come here trying to beat us.
“We’ll be ready for the fight and the boys will be disappointed at Tuesday, they will get into the final third and create more chances.
“I’ve met him (Ben Strevens, Dagenham & Redbridge manager) a couple of times and obviously we had the game earlier in the season where we weren’t at our best, but managed to sneak a win late on.
“They was really disappointed because they did play well on the night and created a number of opportunities but we defended well in the end.
“They’ve just put seven past Oxford so they’ll be on fire and they will be confident going forward, but that also leaves them with gaps in behind, that’s what we will try to do tomorrow.
“We don’t really know how they will play as they might chop and change it, but we just have to be ready for three o’clock.
“We need to defend well and attack better than we did on Tuesday night.”
