RESULTS in the Vanarama National League on Tuesday evening mean that York City’s push for safety will go down to the final day.

A 0-0 draw between FC Halifax Town and Ebbsfleet United, a 0-0 draw between Rochdale and Boreham Wood and a 1-0 defeat for Wealdstone against Eastleigh saw each team reach 45 matches played for the season in midweek.

City are now two points clear of Boreham Wood in the relegation zone, but the Wood take on Ebbsfleet on the final day in a crunch clash.

Woking, positioned in 20th, are still able to be relegated being only one point ahead of Boreham Wood, and face AF C Fylde on the final day.

The results mean that City need a point, but if they were to lose to Solihull Moors on the final day, they would be safe as long as they didn’t lose by two or more goals than Ebbsfleet would, if they were to be defeated by Boreham Wood.

Any positive result for Ebbsfleet, a win or a draw, would see York safe. 

In that scenario, Woking would have to pick up a point against Fylde.

Wealdstone are also still eligible for relegation, but would have to fall to a heavy defeat to Oldham Athletic.

Elsewhere, Forest Green Rovers have suffered back-to-back relegations to return to the Vanarama National League for the 2024/25 season.

After dropping from Sky Bet League Two in 2022/23, Forest Green have suffered back-to-back relegations to potentially join York in next season’s National League.

Forest Green needed a Grimsby Town victory to have any hopes of catching up with Colchester United in 22nd position, who are now eight points clear of the bottom-placed Green Devils.

However, a 2-0 victory for Danny Cowley’s Colchester meant that Forest Green’s fate was sealed, with Steve Cotterill’s side returning to the fifth tier.

An early goal from Tom Hopper was partnered by a superb strike from the experienced James Akinde, claiming a crucial three points for the U’s.

It will be an opponent that City will recognise, should they stay up this season, after a 2-2 draw in 2017 saw the Minstermen suffer relegation to the Vanarama National League North.
